Bursaries for ~ 8 weeks paid research work over summer 2011

Summary: Will pay modest (~ £180/week tax free) stipend for ~ 8 weeks over summer 2011 to work with an academic (or maybe in a company), to students with at least 60% (2.1) average. Need to apply with an academic, and before a deadline, i.e., if you wish to do this you need to discuss with academic of your choice well before deadlines below.
The application typically needs to specify a project. This will be developed by the academic and the student together. See for example the Nuffield pages. You can see here for the research interests of the Department's academics, whether they do experiment/theory, etc.

Nuffield. Deadline 9th Feb 2011. All areas of physics.

Wellcome Trust. Deadline March ?? 2011. Note, the project has to have some biomedical link (broadly defined, i.e., includes biophysics).

SEPnet. Surrey students cannot work at Surrey, have to be either another SE England Uni or a company. Deadline April ?? 2011.

Rank: This is a charity which may provide bursaries for summer 2011, however they are not yet announced.

EPSRC: The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) may offer bursaries for the summer 2011. They offered bursaries in 2010. If they do I will provide a link to their page here.

Note there are also some nationality restrictions on some of these. All, I think, basically are eligible to all students at the end of their level 2, but not at the end of level 1. You will need to discuss which scheme is best with the academic you will apply with.
